13 DIY Costumes for Grown Ups

It’s that time of year again.  Time to hit the Goodwill at the last possible second to throw together a costume for a last minute Halloween party.  If you are like me…which I think a lot of you are…you like the costume, but you don’t like the work and you don’t like spending the dough.  So don’t worry.  As usual, I’ve got your back. Here is a collection of costumes you can make in one afternoon with things from the local thrift shop.  Some I’ve done, some I’ve laid out how they can be done…take a peek, I know you’ll be inspired.

Now, without further ado…enjoy 13 unique DIY costumes that will be the hit of the party!

DIY Spartan Cheerleaders Halloween Costume

My favorite costume of all time.  In 2010 Derek and I dressed as the Spartan Cheerleaders.  Make it yourself.  Here’s what you need:  Two black tank tops | a white skirt | White headband | Red athletic pants | Two old white t-shirts | Red felt.

Cut up the white shirts into sashes, then outline them with red felt.  Outline the sashes with red felt.  Cut out letters in felt and hot glue, glue, glue!

DIY Dirty Dancing Halloween Costume

This one will be so easy to pull off.  Put your guy in a black beater tank, black pants and black shoes.  You wear jean shorts or capris and a white button down tied up.

DIY Juno Halloween Costume

Be as cute as Ellen by dressing up as Juno!  If you don’t already have a stripped shirt, paint orange stripes on a white T.  Put your BF in a maroon shirt.  Wrap some yellow felt around the arms.  MOST IMPORTANT…make sure those shorts are short!

DIY Gilligan and Skipper Halloween Costume

Gilligan and Skipper don’t both have to be boys.  Dress up as a cuter version of the “Little Buddy” and make this iconic geek a little more chic.  You can usually find captain caps at local party stores.  And your beau doesn’t even have to put on weight.

DIY Cosby Halloween Costume

For those of you who prefer the lazy route…pick up a “Cosby” sweater from the thrift shop and call yourself Bill.  Bonus points for carrying a box of Jell-o!

DIY Where's Waldo

When we lived in Florida my sweet friend Autumn came to our party as Wilma…Waldo’s girlfriend.  Wear this one solo or as a couple.  She painted red stripes on a white T-shirt.  Add a beret and a jean skirt.  Pop the lenses out of a pair of 3D movie glasses…then spend the night photo bombing.  After the party tell your friends to “Find Waldo.”

DIY Office Halloween Costume

Be TV’s cutest couple Halloween style.  The regular Jim and Pam just wear normal clothes.  But who can forget their adorable Halloween costumes from a few seasons back?

DIY Hunger Games Halloween Costume

What would a 2012 Halloween be without at least one Katniss Everdeen?  Bonus points for rigging up your own bow!

DIY Doug Funny Costume

Take another page from the white t-shirt book with this one.  Doug wears a white shirt with a green sweater vest and cargo shorts.  We made our vest by cutting the sleeves off a green sweater.  Patty Mayonnaise wears a blue sweater with hot pink dots…I glued felt circles on my sweater.  Bonus points for clobbering Roger Clots!

Here are two more from fellow bloggers!  How cute are they??!

Mary Poppins Costume

Keiko Lynn is one of my new favorite reads.  She’s an adorable designer.  You should totally check her out.  And how sweet is this get up?

SeaKettle shows off how to create this sweet costume.  Check them out now…and follow them while you’re there.
